Gas systems specialist Oxair has launched a new underground nitrogen generator which has the potential to save the mining industry ‘thousands of dollars’, according to the company.
The technology enables companies to generate gases on-site instead of using a network of holes to pipe nitrogen into mines – a practice that has been labelled as costly and environmentally unsound.
It works by inerting the air within the mine, a process that uses inert nitrogen gas to limit the amount of oxygen from forming an otherwise volatile mixture that could cause an explosion.
“Underground nitrogen generation at the coal face is a rapidly growing trend,” said David Cheesema, Engineer at Oxair. “It gives the user the ability to move the generator with any other auxiliary equipment and reduce the number of down holes needed to run pipelines underground.”
