French industrial gas supplier Air Liquide will invest around $150 million to expand its production capacity and pipeline network in Tennessee after signing a new long-term contract to supply oxygen to South Korean chemical producer LG Chem.

Air Liquide will build, own and operate a second air separation unit (ASU), liquefier, storage and a pipeline to be commissioned in 2027 at its Airgas production facility in Clarksville, Tennessee. The increased capacity will produce oxygen to meet LG Chem’s requirements for its planned new manufacturing plant to supply cathode active material (CAM) for lithium-ion EV batteries.

The $1.6-billion first phase of LG Chem’s plant, expected to be commissioned in 2026, will have an annual capacity of 60,000 tons of cathode materials—enough for approximately 600,000 high-performance EVs.

“As part of the long-term contract signed with LG Chem, we will be putting our solutions at the service of the battery ecosystem in the US. Additionally, through this investment, Airgas will more than double its local liquid nitrogen, oxygen and argon production which will enable us to support the increasing demand from merchant customers in Tennessee and surrounding states,” said Matthieu Giard, Group Vice President, Americas.
